100 word response 1 reference/intext citation Due 7/11/2024

Braugher

Innate immunity is known as non-specific immunity, is the body’s first line of defense against pathogens. It’s a natural defense mechanism which is present at birth and does not require prior exposure to a pathogen. It is characterized by a rapid response to invading pathogens and is not specific to any particular pathogen.

Acquired immunity is known as adaptive immunity, is a specific defense mechanism that develops over time as a result of exposure to a pathogen. Acquired immunity is characterized by a slower response to invading pathogens compared to innate immunity but is highly specific to the pathogen that caused the initial exposure.

For example, the skin is an example of innate immunity. It’s a physical barrier that prevents pathogens from entering our bodies. Skin is composed of dead cells that constantly shed, making it very difficult for pathogen to attach and penetrate the body. The skin also contains antimicrobial peptides that can kill pathogens upon contact.

Antibodies are an example of acquired immunity. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to a pathogen. Highly specific to the pathogen that caused the initial exposure and can neutralize or destroy the pathogen. Antibodies can also help activate other components of the immune system, such as phagocytes which can engulf and destroy pathogens.
