Part 2: Using Maine learning standards– Reading: Foundational Skills/Phonics and Word Recognition–Standard 3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words–Grade 3a: Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes—write a lesson plan to teach the standard (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 4). The lesson needs to include the following intervention principles:
- Use precise, simple language to introduce the lesson.
- Use explicit instruction and modeling to review concepts and introduce new procedures.
- Have students practice the procedure and provide feedback.
- Provide concrete, repeated opportunities to correctly practice the skill and receive feedback.
- Have students practice and explain new concepts, in their own words, incorporating terms you’ve taught. Provide feedback.
- Provide immediate and explicit error correction. Have the student practice the correct response.
